Baton Rouge Metro Airport Receives DOTD 2018 Transportation Excellence Award

February 28, 2018

The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development (DOTD) recognized the Baton Rouge Metro Airport with the 2018 Transportation Excellence Award for Intermodal/Public Works Project Development.

The Baton Rouge Metro Airport (BTR) received the award at the Louisiana Transportation Conference (LTC) today. BTR’s 2018 DOTD Transportation Excellence Award was for the new Emergency/National Disaster Multiplex facility. The 24,000 square foot facility is located in the Airport’s Aviation Business Park on the north end of the airfield. The Multiplex includes a ramp area for parking large cargo aircraft, hangar space for relief supply warehousing, facilities for temporarily housing emergency relief workers, and an emergency operations center with meeting rooms and office space. The Multiplex can also serve a wide range of non-emergency uses for the region such as personnel training for emergency-response preparedness.

It has been tradition at the Louisiana Transportation Conference to recognize special achievement in engineering and construction projects performed by the Department and transportation partners. This competition recognizes the "best of the best" projects, demonstrating dedication of all of us to providing the highest quality in transportation infrastructure to our customers, the citizens of Louisiana and the users of our highways, transit systems, airports, ports and other public works.

“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the Baton Rouge Metro Airport,” said Interim Director of Aviation, Ralph Hennessy. “It took a lot of time and hard work by many people to complete this project, but our area now has a Multiplex critical to facilitating a response to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the 2016 flooding.”

About BTR

The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is the second largest airport in Louisiana and the upper Gulf Region by passenger volume. It is served by the major, network airlines – American, Delta, and United – with hub flights that provide access to destinations worldwide. While the airport is a major economic generator for the Baton Rouge area, it is administered as an Enterprise Fund, generating its own revenues for operations as opposed to receiving local tax funds.
